Digital Alternative Printing

I'm really interested in learning more about digital alternative printing. I've come across some videos and information about using inkAID, but I'd like to know what other options may be available. Does anyone print with an inkjet printer using alternative mediums, especially recycled materials? Most recently I've tried printing on some old encyclopedia pages and can't figure out what settings or ICC profile to use. It's a slick surface. So far without inkAID it just smears and wastes ink. I'd like some intelligent feedback before I just keep trying different things and wasting too much ink. I'm printing with an Epson R3000.

I would not worry about trying to profile encyclopedia paper. The words will inherently affect the output variably... My guess would be that the paper is over-saturated, try lifting the shadows....
