I recently got the Canon 10D and I've been very happy with it. I've been using the EOS system for years (been using the Elan 7e 35mm before I went digital) and have lenses and a 420EX flash unit, so I wanted to make sure I didn't blow the investment by switching to another system.
So far it's been great. The focus is a just a little softer than I usually like, but using Unsharp Mask or some of the Photoshop stuff you can find online you can clear it up with a single click. I had some of my digital shots in a show along with some of my 35mm shots in 8x10 formats and no one could tell the difference. Plus, since the chip is smaller than 35mm it effectively increases the size of all your lenses, which could be good or bad depending.
But, yeah, it's expensive. The camera, extra batteries, memory cards (don't skimp on memory!), and BP-100 (not sure of the model name) all cost about 2K.
Memory will probably be your biggest expense. 1GBs card will run you about $200+, but they're so worth it.
