digital counter stoped

I was taking pictures at my sisters sweet 16 and I used raw & jpeg switching a few times and noticed the counter showing the only 22 shots that I could take with the memory card and it stoped counting even after taking more shots. Any idea on why?

22 shots? Are you sure that didn't say r22? As in 22 remaining in the buffer? These get reset when the data is read out of the buffer and onto the card.

Other things it could be is compression related. The camera has no idea how large the final image will be if you use compression. Nikon's compressed NEF format does this. It will report only how many full sized (16mb) NEF files can still fit on the card and the counter won't change when I take a photo which turns out to be only 8mb.
