I think I'm leaning towards my cell phone for park stuff. That's probably the best thing with zero hassel. I'll take out my camera when we go for walks or if I'm up before everyone else.

I usually trade sleep for photo time when I’m on a family vacation. While they’re sleeping in, I’m up and out!

Are you looking for something to take family photos/candids or artsy stuff? If you’re going to get time on your own and you’re going to be able to go out there and get some artsy stuff then I’d say something with a mid range zoom. If you’re just looking to take family photos - here’s Johnny with Mickey and here’s mommy and Johnny together, use the 35mm 1.8 or do you self a favor and just use your cell phone and enjoy your trip with your family. My last trip to Disney I ended up leaving my Nikon in our room the majority of the time because I was tired of lugging it around. It’s one of the main reasons I switched over to mirrorless.

Not claiming Any of these are great, but just to give an idea based on Disney and focal ranges.

This is the best advice so far, today a DSLR is for art, for taking vacation photos which can be quickly uploaded to social media use your phone.

I only take my DSLR for specific photo opportunities.

I loved that Sigma 17-70 it was the perfect walk around lens and it was on my Nikon 7100 90% of the time. Everyone always recommends the Sigma 17-50 because of it's set aperture but the 17-70 has a nicer bokeh, IMO and is also a "macro" lens in the sense that it can focus super close to the subject so it's very versatile.

Olympus EM10 + PanasonicLumix 12-60 (as the GP lens) + Olympus 17/1.8 (for low light)

Or a P&S.
I would be scared of handing my phone to ANYONE, the way many people do, to get their pic taken. A P&S is safer to hand to someone.
The other advantage of a P&S over the phone is, you can easily change batteries. What do you do when you drain the phone battery? I saw it happen. Do you have a power pack and USB cable in your bag, or is it back in the hotel? Your phone is now leashed to the power pack.

Virtually all of the family pics that I shot with my family all did NOT have me in the pics.
Similarly, the pics that my brother shot, did not have him in the pics.
It is kinda hard to shoot a family in the ride pic, when you have to be on the ground with the camera to shoot the pic.

Having been to Disney way too many times to count and lugging my DSLR's, I will tell you from the BTDT camp you really won't need it. The exception would be if you are going to Animal Kingdom, then you would need a bit of reach to take pics on the safari ride (which I recommend highly and do it twice, once first thing in the morning and then again just before the park closes as that's when the animals are most active). I would look at a P&S with a good optical zoom that runs on normal batteries. That would cover just about everything and use your DSLR for AK day.

I own a P&S SX30is that I've used in the parks. I've also been a million times, it becomes more magical when you don't care about the rides and just enjoy walking around. I love the atmosphere and photo opportunities.

Last time I was there (about 8 years ago during spring break) I brought a 17-50 Tamron and one prime (85mm). I got there when the park just open and was able to take some family photos without other people in the photos.

If I heading to Disney today, I will just bring one the point and shoot. Either the Sony RX100 or RX10
