DIY Camera Strap Insurance

Hello fellow TPF'ers.

I purchased a new camera strap. Not a Rapid. If I had the money, I probably would have. BUT...I did this instead. I got a cheaper one on eBay, but did a DIY on a secondary security device to help reduce the risk of damage should the quick release plate fail. Even if I did have a BR, I still would probably have made this thing. Actually, I still would have. I know I would. So, if it helps you, then great. If not, and you know someone it can help, pass it on.

Gosh, that looks a bit, uh...hideous. How about a seven inch length of clear 50-pound test monofilament fishing line, tied into a blood knot or a UNi-knot, to make a loop? Not kidding.

I would not want all that metal rolling around with my camera, even with the plugs over the threads. But that's just me.

Gosh, that looks a bit, uh...hideous. How about a seven inch length of clear 50-pound test monofilament fishing line, tied into a blood knot or a UNi-knot, to make a loop? Not kidding.

Truth be told, I could care less what it looks like (to a degree). It's purpose and it's integrity supersede looks. Considering I didn't have much of a budget, I figured I would give this a go. I'm thinking of something to cover it with, but haven't gotten that far.

Black electrical tape, I reckon. Stig's right though, the carabiner will drive you nuts after 10 mins.

Well, if you want to make this look like it was done by somebody with experience, I would suggest looking into some crimp sleeves that are NOT so huge and ungainly as the hardware you've used in this first-draft...

Look into "leader sleeves" American Fishing Wire Single-Barreled Leader Sleeves : Cabela's

These are used to make leaders for heavy game fish, like halibut and tuna...fish that can easily outweigh a man, and these sleeves are designed to withstand the "pull" and "fight" of giant yellowfin, sharks, marlin, etc.. Used on heavy-test monofilament line that's about the same size as your coated cable, a couple of good sleeves will be as secure as you'd ever need for something as whimpy as a 5-pouind camera and lens just sitting there...plus it will not look so inelegant.

They had something similar to this at Home Depot. I'll look into it. Thanks for the head's up. Appreciate the input.
