Do you use Camera phones or Compact cameras for general snapshots?

Today... I got thinking again about whether I need my Canon S90 or not, I rarely seem to take it anywhere as it dosen't seem to offer very high Image quality from what I can tell. If I am going out with 'photography' in mind, I will take my DSLR with me. If I see a sudden photographic opportunity I seem to use my iphone 3GS mostly as it is always with me. I am now seriously considering selling the S90, as it gets little to no use. The 3GS photo quality is pretty crappy, but the S90 doesn't seem alot better in my eyes.

I am now honestly thinking I may be able to sacrifice the higher IQ of my S90 for a iphone4, the iphone4 will get taken everywhere obviously meaning it's much more likely to get used regularly.

Do most of you guys use compacts still as an addition to your DSLRS/ Mirrorless cameras? Or have you found a camera phone adequate for day to day snapshots?

I read a recent review in a british photo magazine that rated the new iphone better than most sub 200 pound compact cameras. It rated the samsung galaxy 2(I have this) almost as good. I cant bring myself to use my phone for any shots that I have an inclination I may want to keep or print. Maybe it's the way I use it but it doesn't feel like using a camera

My mobile phone rings when someone calls it. If I press the correct sequence of numbers, I can call someone else. My announcement is to tell the caller not to bother leaving a message because I won't be listening to it. I have a mobile phone when I remember to take it with me or can find the last place I put it.

For fun shots, keeping a small footprint, carrying less weight and staying personally involved at events, I have an Oly EP3 m4/3. I got my partner a Canon S95 and TBH, it does quite well.

I use my cell for the most primitive of snapshots and work related part's photos, get's the job done and always available. I have Canon p&s for when the dslr is too bulky and an aquatic capable film cam for the beach

I am trying to justify the sale of my S90 as I think I might be better off spending the money from the sale on a long overdue flash, I really don't like having gear lying round that I don't use much, I'd rather sell it and spend the money on gear I will use. I know some people will happily have 64 lenses and 5 backup cameras, to me though it seems a bit pointless. But yes, the S90 is a pretty good camera in some respects, but I find the IQ of it much closer to phone level quality than DSLR level quality.

So I was wondering if the reports of 'Phone cameras replacing compacts' is something that is happening with members of this forum..

Yes, the iPhone 4 (early version) has a 5MP, backside-illuminated sensor, f/2.8 lens, shutter speeds 1/15 to 1/10800, ISO range 80 to 1,000, and takes good images. I've shot approaching 6,000 snapshots and video clips with my iPhone since August of 2011. My Panasonic sits in a drawer, broken.

I keep my S100 in my pocket for those spontaneous moments like insane sunrises or something that randomly catches my eye. I'll bring my 7D any time I know that I'll be taking photos in advance.

I do this too, I have the 4s, and had the regular 3G before this. The 3G was average but useful, but super grainy and no flash (most of my personal non-SLR shots are well, in bars/clubs etc dark [sometimes not just literally. ha.] places). The 4s has an actually usable built-in flash system, it's not unbelievable but since I always have my phone with me, very convenient. I've never had a compact camera, and feel no need to with this setup.
Oh and there are a few cool apps, and now you can set it to fire on a physical button instead of just the touch screen. Super useful. also you can click one spot to focus on and another to base exposure on, very useful in darker or contrasty light situations.

DSLR for most important stuff though, I love manual controls.

I have an iPhone4 and it's used for spur of the moment things. If Its planned I use my DSLR.

I have a Panasonic LX-5 that I use quite a bit. Because of its forgiving DOF and excellent image stabilization, I can easily handhold it at 1/2 second for shots in the low light of our church. And I mean I get really sharp images. If I want shallow DOF (which is pretty often) I have to use my K7 DSLR. but I usually have a fast (heavy) lens on it, so there is no way I can handhold such long exposures. The Panasonic is also much less intrusive for candids. The LX-5 is comparable to the Canon S95, and I really love it. I spent three weeks in Italy with nothing but the LX-5 and and I'd never part with it.
