Does anyone know best place to shoot northern light & best settings?

sorry, didn't know where to post this. Please forgive me.

specifically in NYC since I was recently notified this will be one of the lucky states where it will show up. Can experience photographer tell me the best spot to shoot, equipments i need to bring, time to be there and best settings to shoot/lens
 
I would assume you have to go upstate away from the light pollution of the city to see anything.
 
The northern States like MN are best. But the auroras are the result of sunspot activities. At the present time the sunspots are in a cycle minimum.

We went to Iceland in the winter but the northern lights activity was minimal. What looked to the eye like a gray cloud, was quite impressive when shot on a tripod at f4.5, 30 sec. 3200 ISO.

As it turned out the the green glow was to dim for the the eye to detect, it was just grey but the long exposure did the job.

You can check the internet for space weather, they monitor the sunspot activity.
