He stands out more w/ the selective coloring, but the b/w conversion comes off a little flat. Also the hard shadows gives it an appearance of camera shake at first glance IMO anyway. You could clone the shadow out w/ some patience in photoshop.

i agree, i noticed the lighting diffrence after posting it i do think it looks better lighter...

I dont really like the selectively colored photo - they look like 2 different pictures pasted over each other. Could try desaturating the mother a bit, but not converting her to 100% b/w? The flatness comes from lighting, I think. maybe diffusing the flash or offsetting it more could make it pop better.
