You apparently don't fly formation. Airplane 1 is the photo plane; its pilot is setting the course and "watching where they are going." Airplane 2's (Number 1 actually is the picture) pilot's responsibility is to maintain his precise spacing with the airplane 1, the photo airplane thus must continuously monitor its position. Likewise, airplane 3's (number 2 in the picture) pilots only responsibility is to maintain his position relative to airplane 2. While it appears that they are looking at that's simply because the camera is in airplane 1.

I think you missed my winking emoji. Not that I have flown formation, I've had my pilots license since Aug 1990. Did stopy flying in 2003ish. Married in 2006, might have had something to do with it (not specifically her fault, just expenses).

Money is my excuse, but not the whole issue. From Feb 1999 thru Nov 2003 I was working for same company as a ride on Mechanic flying in jumpseat in the cockpit. I was in the air more than flight crews were. They have rest rules, mechanics do not (scary thought). Anyway in that time I realized being a long haul pilot was an extremely boring job. And really didn't enjoy flying on my own. Now as I have shifted to inspection I no longer ride and 99% of the time I am flying commercial to where I need to be. They did change a little over the years and our mechanics are guranteed a seat in the coach cabin. But thats more comfortable one way, but less another. Not really better.
