So... no idea who these people are, but I kinda sorta witnessed this little girl dotting a bunch of markers all over her arms and then walking over to show her mommy.. aaand I took a picture. You can't see the dots on her arms from this angle, but imagine every color in the box blotted in bunches down her arms. Pretty sure this homecoming was EXTRA memorable for her mommy and daddy! haha

You are explaining why this picture should be cute as opposed to the image telling us.
The brightest areas, like the back of that woman's shirt, are not important, in fact, I think, the entire image is way over bright.
the real central point of interest of the image is in the lower right quadrant and the top quarter is wasted space.

Thanks for the comments. I cropped it this way to leave all of the surrounding people's expressions in and to show literally everyone (including lady way off left of the white shirt lady) jaw dropped looking at this little girl. I also wanted the flag in the top left in the photo to show us where this was.

No, we can not see the dots on her arm... not a single one..

As for "jaw dropped reaction" , honestly I am not buying it, it is just a mild polite surprise, I can not see a single jaw dropped.. The most interesting part of the picture is two kid's reaction - the girl in the middle chewing the American flag - she looks puzzled, and the boy who is looking at the girls mother, anticipating her angry reaction.

But it all must be much much closer, the photographer is way too far away and the emotional impact is lost. And of course we simply must see the dots... otherwie it just makes no sense.

I think you identified a moment that could make a good photo (I don't know that I'd call it 'street' - 'slice of life' maybe?) so I think the idea was there, but the execution wasn't. You yourself recognized that an essential element was missing: the dots. Just the reaction from the adults is not enough.

You said you wanted to let the viewer know where the picture was taken...so it's important that this happened in America? In a gym? Is that where they are, in a gym? I just don't see the relation between the setting and the moment you were trying to capture. I think the flag and the dead space at the top is unnecessary and takes attention away from the faces.

I'd call it "candid" rather than "street." Not that labels really mean all that much, in the end. It works, or it doesn't.
For me, IF what you were going here, was to clearly show the surprised reactions of adults to this little girl's artistic endeavors, I'm just not seeing it. Without having been TOLD the story, I would just see a little girl trying to get Mom's attention, Mom seeming to put her off with that hand up gesture--the universal, "just a minute, can't you see Mommy's talking?" move--and a bunch of big, fake, plastic smiles from people who look like they've simply been smiling WAY too long for it to look natural anymore.

As for the marker story: I remember one time when my youngest was about 4 or 5. He and his brother were at my parent's house with some of the cousins, and I'd had to work. I walk in the door, and the first thing I hear is "I'm the baby, you gotta love me!" from the youngest--I turn toward him and see that he has turned himself into a kid-size, walking tattoo...he had covered EVERY. Single. Inch. of his body in "art." With Sharpies. :lmao:
Now THAT, I really wish I had a picture of. Unfortunately, I was too much in shock, and nobody else bothered to take a picture. A picture of my expression would have likely been pretty amusing as well.
