Nope, there are no giants doing cartwheels, no statues wearing high heels and definitely no elephants playing in a band out in my backyard…(bonus points if you know what in the blue blazes I'm talking about… :D ), but there are birds. Lots of birds.

Someone else's post recently gave me the idea for this, but I can't remember whose thread it was. Anyway, I started thinking about how many different birds I have right in my backyard and thought I'd do a thread on just the Backyard Birds.

To date, in the 2 years or so I've been paying attention, I have had 33 different types of birds in my yard. Two of those barely count, as they were flyovers that have never actually landed in my yard. But they were in my space for a time, so it counts!

I'll not post a picture of all 30+ birds--I don't even HAVE pictures of all of them, but I mean to remedy that. I DO have a set on flickr, of all the Backyard Birds I've gotten photos of so far.

Kind of hard to pick my favorites, but here's a few of them.

1. Northern Cardinal. Year round and always make such a great photo opportunity!

2. American Goldfinch. These just started showing up in my yard in February. I didn't have any last year, so I was pretty excited to see them.

3. Mourning Dove. "Boring" bird because we have so many, but there is something so compelling to me about their faces. I'm just a sucker for those big eyes!

4. Common Grackle. Obnoxious birds and such big bullies. But man, when the light hits them just right, those colors!

5. Tufted Titmouse. One of my favorites, because they're so small, yet very unafraid of most anything. When the other birds scatter because of a predator nearby, the Titmouse is usually the first bird brave enough to come back to the feeder.

6. House Finch. I probably have 20 of them on a regular basis. This is the first year I've seen as many females as males, so maybe I'll see some baby finches in short order.

7. Purple Finch. In two years of looking for them, I'd never seen one until just recently, when this one decided to grace me with his presence. He was there one day, gone the next, so I'm on the hunt for another one.

8. American Crow. Okay, to be honest, I didn't take this picture in my backyard, but I do HAVE them in my yard, so I'm counting it. They are harder to get good pictures of than one might think, because they are so BLACK and dark. But the sun was hitting this one just right, and he just sat there posing.

9. Red-bellied Woodpecker. I love all the woodpeckers, so fun to watch. I also have Downys and Hairys. But the one I really want to see is a Redheaded and I've not found one yet.

10. Eastern Bluebird. We have these beautiful birds year-round here, and they are quite common. But THIS was the first one I've ever seen in my yard, just recently.

Well, I could keep posting but that's probably already 8 or 9 more photos than was necessary. :D

If you want to see more of them, go to the flickr set.

I'm curious if any of the other bird photographers have a record of how many birds you've seen in YOUR yard? I'm betting that at least some of those in Florida and California would pretty easily beat my 33 species.

Wonderful set Sharon. That is a nice variety indeed.

My backyard is actually outside of my patio. We don't get nearly the variety you have (foot traffic and vehicle noise don't help).

We live in a new development so not too many birds yet. Hopefully this year will be better - my son worked very hard crafting a little bird feeder to hang out on the railing. While the other houses were being built we had a lot of killdeer and goldfinches hanging around, now all I see are starlings, American robin, and mourning doves.

Crank up the CCR or Foggerty and I bet you get a lot more than birds at your backdoor. lol.

Color me jealous/envious Sharon :)

I live on 10 acres of prairie bush a dozen or so miles from the city.

My regular visitors are magpies, chickadees, hairy and downy woodpeckers, sparrows, finches and the ruby throat hummingbirds in the summer.

Occasionally I see blue jays, doves, red polls, pine grosbeaks, spotted towhees, sapsuckers, brown thrashers, partridge (prairie chickens) and nuthatches.

I've seen/captured ONE oriole and ONE pileated woodpecker !

The blue birds and the odd owl were regulars UNTIL I purchased a dslr, sigh...

Thanks for starting this thread, I feel a little better now :)

Cheers, Don

All very nice detail, great set of photos :)

"dinosaur Victrola, listenin' to Buck Owens..."I've loved that song since the early 1970's! [There is a decent video of it here ]

I like the mourning dove and the purple finch the most. Purple Finch is just so well-balanced, and I absolutely LOVE the branches and the overlap of the background branch by the bird's body, eye direction, etc.

So jealous of all the beautiful birds in your yard! I can't seem to find much variety around me...but lots of cardinals and some warblers. Just recently found a house finch also! Great pictures!!

Thanks all! When I first started doing bird photography, I don't think I had nearly this variety in my yard. But then, I also didn't have a single feeder or water spot for them. Now I have 5 different regular bird feeders, plus two hummingbird feeders I just added and one birdbath, but I'm about to add two more DIY bird baths.

You were one of the ones I thought would have a LOT more variety than I do! Well, you might not have them looking out your backdoor, but you sure do have a lot to choose from nearby!

:lmao: I think I'm going to pass on testing that theory. I get enough weirdos passing by my house without inviting them to stop by for a visit!

That actually sounds like a pretty good mix already, and with 10 acres, I could go crazy building great bird habitats! I "only" have about an acre of land, but since I live just about a mile from our downtown area, that's considered quite a good bit of land. And I've turned most of my backyard into either vegetable garden or bird habitat. Of course, as far as the birds are concerned, the garden is ALSO their habitat.

I've just added two hummingbird feeders, so I'm really hoping I'll be able to add hummers to my list this year!

LOVE me some CCR!! And I just love how HAPPY he looks singing that song! Okay, yeah, he's probably stoned, but he's happily stoned! :D

Out of all the photos above, even though some are really "cool" because of their rarity, like the Purple Finch…my absolute favorite is the Mourning Dove. That picture makes me just feel peaceful.

In Charleston? Really? I'm really surprised; I'd think you would have incredible variety there. Charleston is probably my second favorite place in the entire world (the first being where I am now); if I were going to move anywhere, that's where I'd probably want to live. I know you have some great birding opportunities close to you. Do you have much out in the way of feeders or anything? I'd just think if you put feeders and a birdbath out and give it a little time, you'd get quite a large variety!
