With the Nikkor 85 Micro VR I always do f/22. No aberrations at all. Not all macro lens can do this. Most of them lose performance from f/16 on.
At f/22 one gets a very comfortable DOF . You just need a good diffuser and light control.

I never use tripod. All my macros are hand-held but I always use VR, even if some stand it doesn't work for macro.
