What's new

E-books and iPhones etc.

sm4him - far as I know the page you last read will be information only stored on your Kindle itself, so it shouldn't be syncing to a different unit at all for page reads.

Far as I know you can read the same book on two different machines without any problems at the same time (if there is any possible problem then just turning off the wireless connection would solve it since then it would have no knowing what you were doing on it - and heck if you're not using the net at the time the kindles wireless should be off anyway to conserve battery life).

Hmmm. But if I read a book on my Kindle Fire and stop at page 57, then later I open the same book on my Droid--it opens to page 57, right where I left off.

Hmmm I've not used the Fire - I've only got the regular basic Kindle (the Fire is coming out for the first time in the UK sometime soonish). That said I would have thought it possible to disable inter-device sync somehow

Oh, yeah, it probably IS possible to disable that; hadn't thought about that. I personally LOVE that aspect, because no matter what device I use, I don't have to worry about where I left off reading. But if two people were using the same account, seems like that might become more problematic.

If we really like it, maybe well consider another one...maybe a fire. :D

One thing to keep in mind is that the Fire is quite a bit heavier.

You can access it on both device on iBooks as long as you are both logged on to the same iTunes app store account on both devices. If your wife has her own account though she will have to purchase the book also. I have done this plenty of times with my iPad and iPhone. Since both are logged in to the same iTunes account I can access anything I purchased with both devises.

As far as reading on phones. I find it to be a little harsh on my eyes sometimes. The smaller screen is harder to read sometimes after looking at it for a long period of time. For 15-20 min of reading it is fine.

As far as e-readers I really like my iPad. It's easy to operate and easy on the eyes to read. I know you said something about budget but you can also always look for an iPad 1 uses on eBay or Craigslist and save some money that way. Even an ipad2 would suit you well. Since all you will be doing is using it to read you wont need anything flashy.

I don't have any experience with kindles but my mom has one and loves it.

I tried the Kindle app on my iphone, and it's much better than iBooks.

I'll have to try that out. I'm sure kindle has plenty more books also than the iBook store

The Last Page Read Sync can indeed be disabled... on the Kindle Management page. I leave mine on, as I switch devices a lot... makes it easier. Amazon does recommend turning it off, if people are sharing a book on different devices.

You made the right choice with the Kindle. When it comes to size, portability, weight, holding with one hand, battery life, cost, etc...there is no tablet device (iPad, Kindle Fire, etc.) that's even in the same league as the Kindle. We recently took a family beach vacation and my wife and I sat on the beach all day every day reading our Kindles in bright sun and neither of us charged our Kindle's all week.

I have a Paperwhite model on pre-order and am looking forward to the backlight for reading in bed.

Thanks.

I have a bit of a problem now. My anniversary is Oct. 15th, that's when I was going to give my wife the Kindle. But....she is a die hard Harry Potter fan and she wants the new JK Rowling as soon as it comes out (tomorrow). I don't want to her buy the new hardcover, probably for $30. The main reason for getting the Kindle is that hardcover books are a pain to read.

The Kindle should be here tomorrow...so I might just have to give it to her early. And while I'll have to let her have it for the new JK book, I have a good case for getting it back soon afterward. She works out at home and we have a few machines...one of which is a terrible (cheap) elliptical...not even rated for my weight. So yesterday she found a much better one in the classified and we bought it. $200 for a mint condition machine that was $2700 new.

Early Anniversary presents earn you extra brownie points I'm sure!

But if they are too early, you have to get another one on the day...

True - but this is why florists and restaurants were invented ;)

You're working for her...aren't you?

So can you (or anyone) recommend some good free (or cheap) e-books to get my library started? I've already got some of the classics and I've been reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories.

Is anyone a member of Amazon Prime?

There are TONS of free "classic" books available on Amazaon. Amazon.com: Best Free Books on Kindle

I am a member of Amazon Prime also, what do you need to know?
