Error 99 with my new Canon Digital Rebel XT

I know that it's a generic warning, but anything you suggest I try before bringing it into the shop?

It's an error letting you know that the contacts for the lens are dirty or there is a problem with the lens communication. Just hit them up with a q-tip or lens cloth on both the lens and body and it should hook it right up.

i get an error 99 on my 20d, its something to do with the battery and a quick eject and back in again works!

crapped myself first time it happened tho'!

The error didn't go away after a new lense, new battery, or cleaning so they are giving me a new one for free! I'm glad I bought locally and not online.
