Metering will usually be determined by the lighting. I generally use either center weighted or spot depending on the lighting of the particular scene I am shooting. Again, by attending rehearsals you can even pre-plan for no only the action you want to capture, but the lighting that you will have to work with.

I am not allowed in the rehersals, it's supposed to be a surprise from my kids.
But I will try a bit before they start and see what's more consistent.
