When trying artful compositions, you should be looking for the stronger elements (line, texture, balance, etc.) to be the main feature, and try to shoot compositions that provide something unexpected to hold a viewer's interest.

Of these shots, the grid of squares with ice on only the horizontals comes the closest to illustrating what I am getting at.

^^I agree, though I think the shot of the telephone poles also illustrates that idea nicely. I also like the "From Window" shot, which is less of an abstract and more a study of textures and shadow.
