External Flashes....

I'm in the market for an external flash, I'm shooting w/ a D7000. I've never used one before either. I have been shooting a lot of concerts lately and getting sick of the sh*tty lighting that most clubs tend to offer. I won't be doing much portrait or studio stuff, if that makes any difference in which flash I end up with. I would like to stay with nikon as well...sooo SB-600, SB-700 or SB-800..? Any suggestions would be great! thanks!

BTW..I usually shoot with either 50mm 1.8, 35mm 1.8 or 11-16 2.8 lenses

Get the most expensive flash that you can afford. It will last you a very long time.

I have an SB-600 and SB-700. The 600 has a higher guide number so it's a bit more powerful. The SB-700 has an easier-to-use interface, it recognizes Nikon filters when installed, and it has 3 light distribution patterns. Both are Nikon CLS-compatible, both function in slave mode, both are good flashes. IF I had to choose between the two I'd probably go with the 700 simply because the controls are easier to use and it has 3 different light patterns.

If you just need light and lots of it, than pick up an SB910 when they hit the shelves shortly.

I agree with that. It sounds flippant, but it's been true in my experience over the past almost-30 years with Nikon.

Also check with the venue regarding use of Flash (yes even for professionals) and what ever you do DO not put a damn Fong thing on your flash or you will have a bunch of people in the audience ready to kill you for ruining their show and burning their retinas

I always check with the venue and the band on flash use, I try to be as respectful as possible.

what are those fong things? my sister who owns her own portrait studio said she uses one... obviously very different styles of photography between the two of us, but I'm just curious!
