Yeah, that can happen sometimes. Just be somewhat careful with your gear. Small scratches in the front element coatings will not downgrade your images nearly as much as people think.>SNIP.

People have this idea that lens front elements are so,so delicate. But hey, just take a look at this video,and see for yourself what this $100 50mm f/1.8 EF-II lens was able to withstand... take note that after the ballpoint pen strikes, the front element withstands multiple hammer blows--from both the front or claw part of the hammer, and also from the rear, nail-driving face of the hammer! This inexpensive (and sadly, already broken) lens held up ASTOUNDINGLY well to extreeeeeemly abusive acts. As is noted in the video's commentary, the lens was already broken, so nothing of much value was hurt in the making of this video.
