Fine tuning Macro Lens autofocus

I don't think I've done it with any of my Macro lenses D.

My understanding is that fully manual focus lenses like the MPE won't register on your camera body for micro adjustments but I could be wrong.

I've only micro adjusted on 400mm+ lenses. I'd assume the technique would simply be the same on bodies and lenses capable of the function.

In that case:

a) who thinks it is a good idea? - Yes, if it needs done, definitely
b) who has done it and if so how? - Something like below (if it works with shorter focal length lenses)

AF Fine tune — as it is called with Nikon — is a must. All my
lenses and all my bodies went through that fine tuning.

I personally wouldn't bother. The depth of field on a macro lens is so razor thin anyhow, I usually just set focus to closest-possible and then gently rock towards or away from the subject until it looks right in the viewfinder. Just me.
