First attempt at portraits

If you are going for "nice" portraits, you don't shoot there, or you edit the crap out.

A few things I noticed about your photos........

#1 - This camera position can work for an environmental portrait, but I think you would want a broader sweep of the landscape with a short focal length. The rail on the left could act as a leading line if the subjects were closer to it and if you had stepped another 5-10° to your left, his and/or the horses bodies would block view of the house in the background. Since he is looking to the right edge of the frame, give additional space for him to breath.

#2 - I really like the posing on this one and the interaction with the coy smiles. However, the horse's head is huge. I think a much longer focal length along with the couple taking a step forward and to the right (camera left) to be at least even with the horse and close the gap would be an improvement.

#3 - I would bin this one. You will eventually become more self critical with shots like this. If it is blurry, it goes away.

#4 - You missed poorly on the crop here. I like the lighting ratio that is going on with the subjects. I would carry a small two-step ladder around for situations like this. You camera position is too low and the only way to overcome that is for you to be elevated. You could also look for something else to stand on nearby.

There is much for you to grow into, but you haven't done too badly either. Keep at it, read your manual, practice and practice with a purpose some more.

Even if you just moved slightly left or right you can work with your background, or use a wider aperture/longer lens to throw the background out of focus.
