Hello all, I have joined this forum in the hope I can learn and expand my very limited knowledge of photography.

I bought my Nikon d3100 4 months ago and have began photography as a hobby. I'm using the kit lens 18-55mm.

Recently I got intrigued when I saw a black and white photo with colour elements. So I downloaded gimp and after a few hours of reading and practice this is my first photo:

Any criticism welcome as I want to improve and this is an area I would really like to focus on.

I don't like the background, your hand is not well lighted, and including more of your hand would show you that this probably should be framed in portrait format.

Selective color has very few uses that are actually effective making it a little used editing option.

Other editing approaches are used way more and IMO learning those other approaches are where you should spend a majority of your time as far as leaning how to do image editing.

Appreciate all the replies. Perhaps if I had kept the background darker it would have been better?

I was using natural light coming in from a window.

Would you mind listing some of the other approaches even though this is the area he would really like to focus on?
