First "modeling" session with 50mm f1.8

I think you missed focus in #1 by a bit.

#2, I cannot understand why the girls face seem muted when all about it is nice & sharp. ??

F2.2... very narrow DOF. You missed focus on #1 and #2... and didn't have enough DOF to save you (although you got a nice blurred background!) Shutter speed was 1/80 to 1/100... might want to keep that up a bit higher too! and FLASH! Flash add light, shadow and catchlights to the eyes....

#3 is the best of the bunch!.... a good sharpening, and it would be ok!

Less sharp than the hair around it or the scarf.

I thought with the fairly bright day out that flash wasn't needed. Guess I wasn't right there. As for the DoF, I cropped those pics pretty good. Would leaving the extra "junk" help out at all? or just me moving my feet to a better spot?

I am very new here myself I thought for sure the lighting would come up and it did. but the focus I did not understand he blurrred the backgrounds good for portraiture I thought this was exactly what I have been reading was good what are you both saying about the DOF thats missing?

Using a smaller aperture /larger F-Stop would have helped... that or greater distance from the subject... that is all! F4 instead of F2.2.... for instance!

What good is a beautiful blurred background if your subject is out of focus?

Very true!! But a 50mm has massive DOF compared to say.. a 200mm or so...

Another add on, his focal length will probably be limited to 50mm.

BUT of course the subject distance can change, which will make a big difference.

When cropping, if you are wanting to print, keep in mind what your ratio (IE 2x3) is on the photo as this can play a factor.

Don't focus and recompose.

You DON'T need flash if you're experienced enough with natural light, but with your current level a strobe wouldn't hurt to fill and differentiate exposures to draw the model out more. Catchlights from natural light are always much more immersive if pulled correctly. I think you did a decent job, but have to agree that the focus was missed quite a bit.

And I am not trying to argue I am here to learn and I understand DOF I just really didn't see these photos as out of focus, In photo 1 I notice the Bokeh I am not sure if that's the right spelling well it holds the treeline allowing us to know what it is where the other 2 photos do not. I wasn't sure if we try to hold the shape of the background or not But I would like to understand what you feel is incorrect in the DOF of any of the photos. Again I am not trying to argue I am trying to understand though.

If you can't get a flash get a reflector or google a DIY reflector, you'll notice a huge difference
