First Photo Shoot

whats a diffuser panel?
You can get a cheap 5-in-1 kit. The diffuser panel is #5, uncovered.
PR5132 Flashpoint 32" 5-in-1 Collapsible Disc Reflector, Translucent, White, Black, Silver & Soft Gold.

I have to say that I am extremely pleased with the Lastolite TriGrip reflector / diffuser. More costly, but much easier to control and better light IMO, and the girls are more impressed.

You'll need to purchase the covers separately.

As someone previously mentioned, try and stay out of harsh sunlight for portraits. It can blow pictures out and causes your subject to squint as seen above. It is a huge mistake that many make, taking pictures with the sun directly at your back. Try keeping the sun at a 90 degree angle to you and your subject if the sun is that bright and harsh.

Also these don't really scream CHRISTMAS! to me. Should have told them to dress for a Christmas occasion and bring those cheap santa hats. Would have "brightened" up your subjects a bit.

The exposures aren't bad, but it looks like a bad time of day to be shooting. In 1, 2 and 4 they are squinting. In 5 it looks like they are really close to having their eyes closed. The setting and clothing selection seems kind of drab. I like shot 2 except for not being able to see his eyes. NUmber 3 is a nice shot of your friend but watch for things like odd branches that sprout and look like they are coming out of her head. I'm not too sure she is going to like the way her blouse is falling in this shot. NUmber five has great, natural smiles but, as mentioned, it is a little soft.

You are definitely on the right track. Just watch for details, setting and TOD selection.
