First photos with Digital SLR C&C:)

I previously shot film, and just got me a Canon 20D and love it! Its amazing how much more complicated they are! Here are some of my 1st outdoor photos of my neice. I only have 1 lens so far, a 50mm 1.8/f. Opinions? Thanks! (I know, her outfit, whew)....all taken at

I forgot to add, does anyone have thoughts about 3's color? it seems a bit red to me, but I tried to fix it at no avail.

Admirable first effort, but I see the following issues:

1. The lighting is flat in all three photos. A fill flash would've made the subject pop, and put a twinkle in her eyes.

2. The white balance is off in all three photos. This is especially evident in the green tint under the subject's bottom lip in photo 1, but the problem is pervasive throughout all three photos. I'd recommend you buy an 18% grey card and learn how to use it to set custom white balance.

3. The framing is odd in photo 1, and the girl's stance was awkward in photo 2.

4. In photo 3, the focus was on the flower when it should have been on the girl.

5. The flowers played a prominent role in all of the photos, and yet they were mostly reduced to background blur with an excessively shallow depth of field. You could've taken the same shot at ISO 200, stopped down the aperture to f8, and still shot handheld comfortable at 1/320 sec.
