First Photoshop "color selection'' Edit

VERY new to photography, just started this month... This is me and my brother... I took the pic with a remote... But anyways... This is my first edit (aside from crops, and minor adjustments) Please c+c

Generally you will find that selective colouring is not well received. It's a technique that most photographers learn early in their digital "career" and one that is most often not executed very well. The intent of selective colour is to draw attention to a particular element within an image. For instance in commercial advertising, the product might be in colour and the remainder of the scene in monochrome, allowing the product to stand out. In the case of this image, what stands out are the shirts. If these were shirts in support of a particular cause, that might be valid, but as-is, there's no apparent reason for the colour. My suggestion? You've tried it, you know you can do it. Let's say that it's out of your system and not speak of it any more.

At first glance I thought it was a picture of a breast cancer survivor and friend/family. (My apologies to you brother ) but, it is an example of how selective coloring is used to emphasize an idea. There are very few artists that use selective coloring for the sake of the art ( think Kim Anderson, the Thomas Kinkaid of photography). He uses it well. It became commercially popular, therefore the art community thumbs their collective noses at them. If you are going to do it, do it well and because it fits your artistic expression, not just because you can. (Or Unless the Korman foundation asks you to

^This! Most of the time, all Selective color does is make things worse. Very few photos actually work well with it.I have only done one Selective Color my entire life... but only because I thought it worked! Do you think this one works?

I use selective color-esque techniques to change colors of clothing inside of a color picture, but not to make some black and white picture of a girl holding a rose and the rose color matches her eyes or something stupid like that which every ***hole on flickr does. Just don't do cheesy garbage like that and you're ok.

Doing it ineffectively, or just doing it for the sake of doing it has never will be cool.
