First pic on the forum C&C please

This the the first time Ive uploaded a pic on here. Im new to photography. Let me know what you think of the picture. I dont plan on ever becoming a pro just enjoy taking pictures of my son and other things.

What can I do to make it better?

Solid composition, good timing on the pose and expression. The only thing I can really ding it for is the racoon eyes which is typical for this time of day. The solution is to have more light coming from the sides and less light from the top. It doesn't look like that tree is offering much overhead shade, so the only solution that I can think of at the moment is to reflect some horizontal light at him with something fairly large and light, or use some fill flash. Considering your goal, fill flash is the easiest and you probably have it available on camera.

Thanks for the other comments! I cant find anything on the camera about fill flash. I have a Nikon D40 and the pop-up flash.

Upload the picture to photobucket at the size you want to post it - say 800 pixels high.

Fill flash is a technique, not a camera function. In a nutshell, it's using flash in a well lit situation to illuminate your subject. It's a must in backlit situations so your subject isn't a silhouette against a properly exposed background, and also can be used to eliminate shadows from overhead sun light, etc.
