I think having something in the background would have made for a better picture.

Yep, background is good.

The second picture has branches and stuff which are hiding the hawk.
I do like the second one though. Too bad the tree is more in focus than the hawk.

Nice job, keeping at it will net you some better results!

I am thinking that is an eagle but thats just being picky and I could be wrong but other than that yes the background is fine. There is some blur dont know if its motion blur/camera shake or focus problem though.

I to believe it was a young immature eagle.

#1 would be a nice shot if the hawk would be in focus instead of the branches.
