Why not just use your speedlight off camera bounced? Your sync speed should max out around 1/320. No need to order anything extra now, just put your camera in commander mode and the flash in slave.

Yeah leaving the Sb-700 on the bench for a CFL bulb setup is not the way to go.
With the CLS system, there really isn't anything to figure out.

you might want to get yourself some entry level studio flashes like the visatec or elinchrom, a set of 3 flashes 400w/s should do (at least that's the way I started my studio lol)

When I do portraits (in studio) I always shoot at F8, 1/125, with ISO 200. That just seems to be the sweet spot... sometimes I have to make little adjustments to the lights to get that.

Nope didn't even notice that, but will definitely be paying more attention in the future on the framing.

Yeah I tried wireless remoting the flash, but just didn't have the time to really play with it to find the right settings as everything seem to get blown out. I was even bouncing the flash off the umbrella so I just need to keep playing with it and find the right settings.

Try to focus more on the feel of the picture. You can get away with a technically flawed picture if it has the right feel. If it has the wrong feel, the most technically perfect image would still fail.

You should not go under 1/125 i think. Thank you will have much better results

Make sure your model is at least 6 feet (2m) from the back drop. Put the camera on manual f8 1/125 and set the BG light to be at about f8 to f11 depending on how burnt out you want the BG to be. Set the flash to light the model at f8 on one side and use a silver reflector on the other side. That's details of my basic set up which works for me using the Canon 600D, 430ex ii, sigma 530 DG Super, bollys & reflectors also a set of Yongnuo wireless flash triggers.

I feel like the images need to be brighter or have more contrast, and agree that the first is blurred.
Maybe try a bit of contrast?
