I just picked up a Canon T3 today, and was taking a few shots with it.

This is a tomato plant that I have growing outside the window at my apartment. What do you think?

You should be more aware of things other than your main subject ... the background distracts from the tomato plant.
Once you fixate on your main subject ... start moving around and notice what your background looks like ... and what your main subject looks like at different angles (if possible).

Wow you did good for your first pic. I like how you were able to get an OOF bg and focus on the plant, I certainly wasn't able to in the beginning. The angle isn't quite to my liking, I think it would be more interesting from beneath the blooming flower, looking into the center of it. It looks like the sky might be overexposed but the rest of the photo looks fine as far as exposure goes. Keep it up! Read EVERYTHING you can on this site, it helps!

Thanks for the replies. I must have tried for 5 minutes to get the OOF background and retain the in focus flower. The reason I left the distracting silver at the top of the frame is because that is the air-conditioner in my window. To me it kind of gives me the illusion that the tomato is growing way out of it's comfort zone (ie the city), yet it is thriving the same.

Here's another one of this plant. I really love this tomato lol.

See I thought the silver was the sky and way overexposed! I can see now that its the air conditioner, I think to reach the effect of showing a plant out of it's 'element' you'd really have to have the full scope of it's surroundings in view.

Wedding photographer here we come....keep it up though.

It's really a nice effort. it seems good. You have capability to improve a lot. just keep on practicing, also get training from professionals.
