First Post - Masks and Lake

This is my first critique here, so I'm hoping to get some good advice. These are a few shots from a series I did with my husband a short while ago. I bought a prom dress at a yard sale and got some masks when I was in New Orleans a few months back. This shoot really didn't turn out as I planned because the logistics of it were difficult - it was just me and my husband taking the photos so we were limited to a tripod and the self timer, and my dress prevented good movement. I really didn't have the time to take everything I had wanted.

It's actually been kind of a build up of frustration for me. My husband and I shoot a lot together, and lately it has been getting more and more complicated and involved, but there is only one of US so there is no one to hold the camera or press the shutter or hold the lights. Ugh. Running to beat the self timer is a pain in the butt.

Whatever! They are what they are. Also I saw a snake before I went in the water, and now the dress smells like fish.

I agree with what littlenomad said. I think that these are superb images, both creatively and from a technical perspective. Need to buy my wife a mask

Woah! Call me crazy but I'm not seeing it. Where is it? Or are you saying I HAD a light stand there and cloned it out? Because I diiiiid.

#2 don't like the framing.... too much face cut off... but an interesting shot none the less. Reshoot!
#3 Love it.. as is... lovely!
#4 posted at this size.. subjects are too small, almost a distraction on what looks like a lake landscape
#5 nice.. but pose doesn't look natural, awkward.

I'd like to see a little more light in your shadows- when the light is hitting one side of your body, a reflector may help light the other side just a bit so there isn't such a harsh line between "illuminated" vs "not" (hoping that makes sense).

#3 gets my vote as well. Generally speaking I'm not a fan of Mardi Gras masks (whatever they're called) but that photo is great, absolutely love it.

I have one of those handheld remotes, but the problem with the MKII is that the sensor is on the front of the camera, so with a remote I'd just be taking a picture of me holding a remote. I've been saving up for some PW's, but I'm not there yet.

And yeah, I definitely see what you're saying about the shadows. My shoots right now are mostly one light, and I haven't used the reflector yet because I have no one to hold it! First world problems.

I have one of these for my Nikon... when I don't want to bother with the pocket wizards, and it works well! and for a decent distance too.....
