First post, need a flash

I'm just getting back into photography after many years. Lots has changed, so what should I look for in a flash for my D7000? Will need something general purpose. I'm not nor will I be a professional photographer so affordable is mandatory.

By affordable I guess I mean in relative terms. I don't want to buy the most expensive put there and I don't want some that will not help enhance my pictures.

The flash used to have, I would guess was in the $300 range, that was in about 1986 how ever and was used on an OM 1 and 4.

I'll take a poke through what you listed, gives me some where to start looking that is all that I really need.

If you could only have one flash what would the one have to have feature on it that you would want? I know, for what sort of application, well I would guess I'm doing more natural photography, nature, my kids and not fashion photography or product shots. I do like people shots and want to do more of that but again not weddings.

I know I have a lot of reading to do, just need a place to start.

After doing some reading it doesn't look like flashes have changed all that much from what I remember. Which is good for me, now just to remember what I have forgotten about using them.

The Nikon flash looks good. Are there any TTL after market flash units that are more cost effective but offer the same level of control?
