First shoot w/ an adult-- C&C

So yesterday I had my first shoot with an adult, as well as my first shoot with a baby that wasn't my own. I'd love some feedback on what is bad and/or good about the pictures. Pictures were shot with a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm VR lens and a 55-200mm VR lens.




Both the girl in the picture and the little boy's mom were extremely happy with the pictures and didn't mind that small pieces were cropped off.

The biggest issue I have with the woman is the posing. I just don't understand the against-the-wall thing. It reminds me of getting arrested...not that I've ever gotten arrested or anything...

The child is cute, but The dappled light in the first one is distracting.

Thess images don't look sharp. The second one, pose throws the shoulder out and doesn't look very natural. Keep at it.

In images 1 & 2, her hair in her face is really off-putting, as are her poses. She looks very uncomfortable and unnatural.

The images of the child really do nothing for me. It's a very cute kid, but in #3, it's a straight on, centered photo with distracting lighting. #4 doesn't do it because the main subject (the kid?) is looking away from the camera.

Thanks everyone for your input! The poses were the girls choice, not mine. It was her first time "modeling" and she wasn't sure what to do. As it was my first time photographing someone, I wasn't sure either.

Take charge. Don't let her pick the poses. You're the photographer, build that trust up so she will trust in what you say and forget about her ideas. Very un-natural looking pose. I know what she was trying to do...but it didn't work at all. Sexy and sensual did not come out at all. Instead...akward and just kinda weird.

Kids cute, the first one might do better with a better crop, but I think the lighting is just not great as is either.

I'm not too sure what looks good and what doesn't as I am VERY new at this and she was the first person to volunteer to let me do pictures of her. However one of my favorite pictures I got of her wasn't posed and she was laughing [will post at the end of this].

Picture #4 the boy is reaching out to touch what was his grandfather's jersey. He passed away before the little boy was born so the picture has some sentimental value to it for the mother of the child and this was a picture she wanted.

As for the sharpness.. How do I take sharper images?

Looks much more natural and way better than the first ones in terms of posing and engaging the camera. The background in upper right kinda messes it up for me. I'm sure others with more people shooting experience than me will chime in.
