Not bad. Plenty of lighting with the clear / white christmas lights on the tree.

Thanks Photo Guy!

The shot is a bit warm judging from the skin tones, but overall a sharp image that is composed well as far as the subject is concerned. It would be MUCH improved without all the background clutter.

So kind of orange-ish? As far as the clutter I can probably Photo Shop and Chop that out.

Pretty much how I feel as well.

There seems to be a lot of noise but it's nothing I wouldn't expect unless you had a fast prime and an external flash or something.

Overall I like it!

I have a nifty 50 1.8. I need to try that lens some huh?

Yes. That lens is what you should be using in low light situations. Just don't shoot at f/1.8!!

A comment above got me thinking about white balance. Is it always appropriate to balance the sensors rendering to the color of the light so that we always get a rendering equivalent to daylight? Look at your kids as they peer into the wonder of the christmas tree, isn't part of the charm the warm color from the multicolored lights? Did you ever sit by a cosy fireplace romancing the love of your life? Would the effect be the same if lit by the midday north light?

I'm not saying we should not be aware of white balance, but is absolute technical accuracy always the best choice?

If we are touched enough by a scene to create an image of it, does not the effect of the light in it deserve to also be rendered accurately?

Just saying.

Megan, can you elaborate a bit on your line of thought here.

If you mean the lens should be stopped down to 2.8 then any lens capable of 2.8 would work. If you mean it should be stooped down to 3.5 or 4 then most kit lenses could be used.
