First Shot with a DSLR

So, my girlfriend borrowed a camera from her college for her Intro To Photography course as a part of her Media Communication Technology major. I should be receiving my first DSLR later this week. I decided to buy a Canon Rebel XS. I took a couple shots with the Rebel XSi she borrowed, and this one is one of my favorites that I took. If my internet wasn't so slow, I would have uploaded more. I'll get around to it eventually. Just looking for some comments or critiques. Thanks in advance guys,

Depth of field is a wonderful thing to discover.

The leading lines (a part of which are in focus) take your eye to an area that's out of focus, which I haven't seen much before. Somehow it works. I can't explain why, but I like it.

The funnest part is the right side. The only thing I could recommend is slicing it off(left side).
