First SLR

simple question guys. I am updating to an SLR and have narrowed it down to 2. Should I go for the Canon EOS450d or the Nikon D80.

Exactly.

Either of them are great cameras so you can't make a wrong choice. Especially if it's your first SLR; you won't be able to use any camera with enough deliberation or skill to reap the subtle benefits one camera might have over the other.

So just pick the one that comes with the best price and the lens package that looks best to you.

Out of the two you listed I would say the Canon 450d, howerver, I would get a Canon 30d over both of those cameras you listed. They are about the same price as well. Much nicer camera IMO. Metal body instead of plastic, 5fps instead of 3.5, and its much easier to change the ISO, aperture or whatever on the fly than with the digital rebel series of cameras. Just my opinion though...
