flash-ing help light

hi all!

so a bit of history first.
I've been into serious (or as serious as a penniless high school kid can be) photography for about a year and a half now. being lucky enough to buy my 5DIII for a negligible discount from my dad, I've never needed, nor wanted, to use flash.

recently, I inherited my dad's Minolta Maxxum 3xi, along with two flashes (2000xi and 3500xi). I've read the camera manual, and I learned how to set up the 3500xi for wireless flash. the problem is, it's triggered by the built-in flash, which I want to avoid at all costs since I've got only one 2CR5 battery pack that'll probably last me around ten rolls of film.

can I can use a mounted 2000xi to trigger the 3500xi?

Should work assuming that the 3500xi is only looking for a flash of light, any flash should work.
