flash on D40x?

okay, so my retarded friend got a D40x for christmas. She's kind of dumb, and she can't figure out how to enable the flash. SHe's pressed the i button, tried to switch the flash mode, but even when she puts it on flash, it doesn't work when capturing an image.

help?

Does the flash pop up at all? If it's in auto mode it won't pop up when you press the button.
