What do you mean by using flash (say EX550 or whatever) as a slave?

Using it via remote control. The old style was light sensitive; one flash would set off another. But these days it's usually radio controlled.

But whats the purpose? And what are the goodies that one needs to have (a DSLR owner) for this?

The ones that seem to be most popular are Pocket Wizards.
I have one of those crappy light sensitive ones and it was only 8 bucks on ebay (it doesn't work very well which is not surprising). Where as the pocket wizards are quite expensive (I think like 200-300).

Remote Flash gives your this effect. Its quite common in mtb photography.

It's so that you can use one or more flashes off camera without having a long cord running to the camera.
