Flash Sync Cord

I want a flash sync cord, but i dont know what type I need. I want one that attaches to the hot shoe of my camera (maxxum 5) and then to the flash (foot?). And then for flash I have a sunpak Softlite 1600 A that I used on my yashica, and i have a Black's DZ-80 that my mom uses with her pentax p3. will these work with the maxxum? I heard if you use the wrong flash it can damage the camera.

You can get a plain sync cord from any camera store but they will not work with any automatic modes.
