Flashes or continuous lighting?

Which do you guys prefer in softboxes or umbrellas?

Flashes for portraiture. Continuous lights for **** that doesn't move around. I'd personally just skip the continuous lights altogether.

Will it melt? If so, don't use continuous.

They might seem cheaper but after you wind up spending money on 3 or 4 setups it will be cheaper to just get what you really want in the first place.

Softboxes and umbrellas are light modifiers. Strobes/flash and continuous are types of lighting. The two issues don't have to be related....you can use softboxes or umbrellas on either type of lights.

A better question would be what type of lighting do people prefer for shooting ____________.

For shooting people, or anything that might move...I like strobes. For still life, continuous would be OK (provided you used a tripod)...but I still prefer strobes.

Both for both!

Which I use depends on the nature of the job and the location of the shoot.

When I started out I could only afford some cheap continuous lighting. I had two lights with umbrellas and they worked great for just starting out doing little portrait sessions. I have recently moved up to some strobes and love them too. I will most likely continue with my strobes.

I've heard that using continuous lights in softboxes, because they're enclosed, can cause a dangerous build up of the heat from the lamp?

Flashes are a little tricky sometimes, but they are better that continous because they are in no danger of overheating, especially in a softbox.

It's not to hard to melt a hot shoe flash unit from overheating, or to fry the inside of a softbox with one either.

Strobed light (flash) allows controlling the ambient an strobed light exposures separately. Continuous lighting doesn't because continuosu is ambient light.
