Flashgun cable won't work with my Canon Rebel XT and 430EX II

I love my new flash (430EX II) and I'm playing with it on camera, but I got it to start using off camera. So I go an aftermarket cable from Amazon which says it's compatible. This is the second one from there, so I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. A setting on the camera or flash? (I mostly messed with flash settings) Both work fine together, but as soon as I attach the cable and lock in place... nothing.

Instructions say nothing more than how to attach things.

Try using the eraser end of a pencil to clean the metal contacts on all the surfaces. It might just be that one unit is making a bad connection.
