What a great shot! tack sharp mid air, I have tried to do that, but never been able to, they move so fast.
How long did you try before being able to catch such a beautiful butterfly mid air?

Butterflies are flying around in Florida now?

C'mon!!!

I burned a lot of shutter actuations on this type of shot and it isn't nearly as sharp as I would have liked but it was the best for the day.

C'mon!!!

We have these things called Butterfly Gardens...this was shot at the Museum of Natural History, Butterfly Garden in Gainesville, FL. But, even so, it is February and my azealeas, redbuds, camillas and a bunch of colorful weeds are bursting with color. Very unseasonably warm. I was out in shorts and a t-shirt for much of today and I've already seen a few Gulf Fritillarys and skippers fluttering about.

Thats pretty cool. What ISO was this to pretty much stop the wings? Im on my phone so its hard to pull the info.

ISO???

I shot that day between ISO 400 and 640 with a Tokina 100mm 2.8 lens generally at 1/1600 at f:/4 or 5.6. the tokian macro can be shot either as a full 100mm or in macro mode. No tripods allowed in the garden.

Nice shot. Don't often see them captured in mid-flight like this.

That is a spectacular photo!!

Very good capture and butterflies are very hard to get in flight because of their very haphazard way of flying - up and down the whole way they are tricky to track without trying to get a shot of them!
Getting a good sharp shot on both the face and body of the butterfly and the primary facing parts of the flower is a great feat and indeed is not an easy affair!

That said for sharpness the only way I know to get things like butterfly wings or bird wings (or for that matter almost any wing that isn't gliding) to come out tack sharp is with flash, where you dominate the scene so that the flash light is the primary light source and natural light is pretty much not contributing. This gives you a very sharp shot since the flash light itself is only a pulse of very powerful light which freezes the action.
