In the book the fundamentals of photography (the essential handbook for both digital and film cameras) author Tom Ang states this about proportions:
The composition of an image divided into two equal halves suggests stability, solidity;
Subject placed one third of the way into the image:image space divided into unequal one third and two thirds portions may suggest dynamic equilibrium;
Subject placed at Golden Ratio may suggest balanced, elegant proportion;
Subject placed very close to the edge or cut into by the frame may suggest instability, vitality or an imminent sudden change.
I dont understand why when taking a picture of person as in a portrait everyone keeps saying to put it in the golden ration...not one singel picture...from any company that ever took any of my families pics ever ever ever were in the golden ratio...
they were all centered!
it says here in this book "the compostion of an image can convey braod notions according to the placement of the main subject and the resulting proportions of the space around it...
so I dont believe that all pics need to be taken or cropped according to the rules of 3rds.
Not one single pic in my house taken by paid "professionals" is off centered.
I love this pic of the baby...he's a bit too white...but I still love it.
