Please don't try to remove the lens on your camera.

Unfortunately, the FZ5 cannot be focussed manually. It may have more than one focussing mode, though -- maybe normal and high speed. Check both, if possible. Also go to 'Portrait' mode and see if that does the job.

If the lens is set to AF then remove the batteries and let it sit for 60 seconds and reinstall the batteries.

Sometimes electronics just need reset. Cosmic rays wreck havoc on electronic programming over time and ungrounded devices sometimes need a reset like this. This isn't a joke either. Cosmic rays over time are a common reason why system software needs to be reinstalled on desktops now and then as well.
