But instead I found this lovely pair right above my head.

#1: As you said, the birds are too far away. Also, it appears your sensor is very dirty.

#2: Very nice! Good composition, DOF, exposure. The focus might be a little soft, but it's difficult for me to be sure. Great job capturing the expressive moment for both birds, as well as effectively using the branch as an anchor. I might crop this just a bit tighter. Nice work!

Here's what I mean about cropping tighter. I also cloned out (not very well) the bright spot over left pigeon.

After reading so many c&c I knew that the bright spot was distracting but I don't have the tools to clone that out.
