"Freedom" | Lots of Fog | Crazy Artist Statement

Think of this more as an artists statement rather than a "here look at my pretty picture." We (landscape photographers in general, myself mostly) spend so much of our time focusing on the grand things. The incredible sunsets. The beautiful clouds. The massive waterfalls. And for me, it's often difficult to enjoy the simpler things--take this shot as an example. To me, it represents calm. Focus. Peace. But it's not grand. It won't ever be an award winner. It's not a shot that would stand out in a group of landscape photos. But I love it. Somehow, it's simplicity speaks louder to me than some of the "whoah!" shots I've taken.

You may be crazy. Can't really speak to that.

But I love the shot and everything you feel, comes through to me as a viewer as well. I love the simplicity, I love the gradient of black to purple to gray to white, I love the subtle repeating pattern of the waves. Nicely done.

Sometimes crazy makes sense. I love the shot. I get a different feeling, one of the calm before the storm. What's on the other side that's coming at me. It still tells a story in a single image, it just told me a different one. Same ending. Great capture

My point in offering an opinion is to illustrate that images and the feeling people get is not universal.

If I'm honest (and I mostly am), a lot of landscape shots look similar enough that they all blend together in my mind and no one shot really stands out. The landscape is beautiful, the light is golden, the view is sweeping...etc. There's nothing wrong with all of that and the pictures can be stunning, but once that picture is out of view, I often forget it. Forgive me, but it's difficult to think of it as anything except just a pretty scene, and that's not enough to make it memorable for me.

However, this one stands out. Anyone can "see" when a mountain view or waterfall is beautiful and picturesque, but not everyone can look at bare open water and see the image you found. You've presented something new - its visual impact is simple, stripped down, but the emotional impact belies that visual simplicity. Maybe it's because you started with the emotion and sought to capture that instead of just a pretty scene. Maybe it's the 'timelessness' of black and white, or of the ocean and sky. I don't know. All I know is that I'll remember this one.

It helps to have a story with it. Because of that I like it. In fact I would like it anyways. Some once said "photograph memories, no matter what they might be" this is a great example. I have many shots I took that would be of no interest on here. Frankly offencive It some of them but they are great shots if you know the stories and meaning of the shot.

I completely see that too. I think I feel calmness because thats how I felt out there. Sometimes not knowing what lies ahead can be more peaceful than knowing.
