This book any good: The Photographer's Eye: Composition and Design for Better
Digital Photos?

I know it can be largely up to the individuals artistic skills but there might be some basic photography skills to think about.

His writing style is ponderous and verbose, but he does a pretty good job of explaining certain visual elements to keep in mind while composing shots in your head. I got the book with a 40% off coupon from Borders before it closed. Don't regret it.
