Friendly reminder.. double check your straps from time to time..

Yesterday, I went to the zoo. I had my 70-200vr mounted on my d300, hanging on my right shoulder. As i'm walking out of the reptile building, my camera suddenly just falls straight to the ground with no warning, right on the lens hood and rolls down the hill a little.

After I started breathing again, I went to pick it up to see the damage and if it still worked. Turns on, ok.. lens looks unharmed minus a freshly scuffed hood, ok. Won't focus, it just kinda tries, but never locks on.. crap.. now I start to worry. So I mounted a different lens, still won't focus. Ok, so my expensive lens is probably ok. Take out the battery, put it back in.. no luck. Shot a few frames with no lens. That must've reset something in the camera, there it goes. *whew* Nikon rules!

So basically what happened is the strap on one side worked itself loose and just let go. I put it back on tighter than before, but you can bet your ass i'll be checking it each time I take the camera out from now on.

Here I thought I was going to get a "new" d700, but I guess the d300 still rolls on.

This is why the d300 rocks, it can take a beating. The new plastic bodies just seem so cheap compared to my 300.

Guitar strap with snaplocks, worn across chest. That will not let go.

Tamrac N-15 Camera Hand Strap Quick Release (Black) N-1501 B&H

It has some little metal parts on the strap with "spikes".. dunno how else to describe it. Either I never looped the straps through there, or it came loose on its own.. I think it was user error honestly.
