@Tulsa i dont have a cd or box. I download the trial and then buy a license

I received it as a gift but I cannot use it on this laptop and I dont need a new one because they have macs on campus at school.. sorry again for not clearing things out right away :/

Thought it was a gift. Do they give multiple seriels when you DL the demo?

No, they do not

Dude, if you are going to ACCD for concept design (congrats), you better keep your copy of CS5. The school will NOT have enough computers for all students, and you will definitely be working 24/7, so you should have your own equipment I say save up for a good laptop instead because you will need one.

Better still, get a Cintiq because you will drool over one.

Definitely not trying to defend pirated software, but I doubt Adobe makes their bulk of profits from individuals and students. They make money from corporate clients who buy a whole bunch of CS extended packages.

Actually, if I am Adobe or any software company who wants to have a big presence in the industry that I am trying to serve, I will close one eye to students who use my pirated softwares. Why? First of all, students can't really afford the latest and greatest, yet they are the ones really pushing the boundary of creativity. The software helps them push their level of work so they can actually get a job in this extremely competitive field. When they graduate, they are already familiar with Adobe softwares, therefore creates demand(in an indirect way) within the industry to use Adobe softwares. This sounds like a crooked theory, but it's not, because it's a fact.

Many software companies can't wait to sponsor schools to use their software. One company made a deal with my college to put their software in the school's computers for free, but the school will have to uninstall all competitor's softwares.

No matter how well equipped a school is with computers and softwares, there will never be enough seats to satisfy everyone. Students don't work like 9-5 people. They work when they are not eating or sleeping or in class. They can use every second they have, so there is no fixed routine on when they get to go to the lab to use the comps. Trust me, ACCD will be a place where students will forget what sleeping feels like.

Concept Design will require high processing and graphic power computers for 3D modeling and rendering, as well as digital sketching.

One word of advice. Even though you are about to enter one of the most expensive art and design schools in the US, don't expect the school to provide for you. You are on your own.

@molested cow - thanks for the advice! i need all the help i can get.. im going to visit accd because i need that "extra" little something that im currently missing. i know that its going to be a lot of work and a lot of money. on their homepage it also says that a mac is suggested so im thinkin of gettin one (why are they so expensive *cry*).. btw, ive looked at ur blog and that post about the chinese restaurant is so funny!! lol keep it up ;)

I wouldn't recommend you to get the laptop until you are there, spent a quarter already and know what to expect. You probably won't need powerful laptop for the first few quarters or so. You will probably be doing mostly hand sketches, renderings and so on. Digital medium usually comes later, but the transition will be fast.

Two things you need to invest in.
1. Good laptop with an awesome screen. Apples are recommended just for the LCD screens. I got a dell and totally regretted it. It was a lot cheaper but the screen is useless. The colors and contrast are way off beyond adjustment. So I can't do any color sensitive work(like editing photos) on it.
2. You will either need a Wacom Intuos or Cintiq. Intuos is way cheaper and offers just as much hardware performance, but being able to draw on the screen is a big luxury. Intuos has a big plus too, which is mobility.

You need to start starving yourself and save man. ACCD is in a wealthy area. There is no on campus housing. It's on a hill so you have to drive to get to school. The surrounding area is high cost in living. On the other hand, your classmates will be coming to school in sports cars and stuff, so there will be tons of things to drool over.

@molested cow - wow u sure know a lot about that school.. did u go there?? oh and i already have an intuos and u are right about the screens, my colors never look right when i view them on another computer. Ive also checked out Otis but im not sure if i want to go there.. thx anyways ;)

ive never been to cali so i couldnt visit it yet :( also i gotta look for a place to stay since they dont have housing.. i'll probably end up with 3 jobs to afford it lol.. btw i think this threads needs to be moved or closed xD

As foreign students, you will have a lot of restrictions living in the states. You can't work like local people. You can only work on campus provided that you are able to get a social security card, which you should get one anyways for internships. Basically, they expect foreign students to be rich people who can afford to pay for everything in cash.

i am american, i just dont live in the US atm... im actually from dallas, tx..
