You may be exceeding the camera's close focus limit.

The normal focus limit of that camera is 19.69 inches or almost 2 feet.
In Macro mode the close focus limit is 0.39" (about 5 inches).

Looks like you are too close for the lens to focus.

Try working in on your subject - get focus- move a bit closer - try again - then if you cannot achieve focus back off until you can.

Last July, this user had the same problem with another camera - see link above - and got the same answers.

The x20 can't do "macro" and short focal distances w/ the lens zoomed out...
